Influences of Manufacturing‐Related Microstructural Variations on Fatigue in Carbide‐Rich Tool Steels

چکیده
In cold-work applications, tool steels with high carbide contents are used as cutting and stamping tools. The service life is limited by wear resistance fatigue strength. relationship between manufacturing-related microstructural influences strengths of has not yet been adequately investigated. To investigate these on high-cycle (HCF) strength (NG = 107), rotating bending tests performed AISI D2 M2/M3. Raw materials produced conventional ingot casting subsequent hot working (HW) well in a powder metallurgy (PM) process isostatic pressing (HIP) forging. Herein, statistically validated correlation process-related defect size the resulting presented. Both PM show significantly higher HCF than HW steels. Critical defects appear to be exclusively small oxide inclusions. contrast, cracks typically initiated fracture large, blocky eutectic carbides. main factor influencing size. Other critical features microstructure include matrix hardness, circularity, type. Improvements can obtained reducing mechanical defects, inclusions for PM, carbides microstructures.

Microstructural Characterization of Carburized Steels
*Member of ASM International arburizing has been a popular method for obtaining a unique balance of properties in steels for many years. Steels with low carbon contents are characterized by good toughness and good ductility, but low strength and low wear resistance. By locally increasing the carbon content at the surface, followed by heat treatment to produce a very high hardness in this layer ...
متن کاملStrength gradient enhances fatigue resistance of steels
Steels are heavily used in infrastructure and the transportation industry, and enhancing their fatigue resistance is a major challenge in materials engineering. In this study, by introducing a gradient microstructure into 304 austenitic steel, which is one of the most widely used types of stainless steel, we show that a strength gradient substantially enhances the fatigue life of the material. ...

Microstructural Scale Effects on Fatigue of Aluminum Alloys
ABSRACT A comparative study of the surface microstructural changes after fatigue in an ultrafine grained and coarse grained aluminum alloy was performed using orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The fraction of low angle boundaries with misorientation less than 2.5 ̊ increased for both the coarse and ultrafine grained alloys. A consistent decrease in the fraction of low angle boundaries, with ...
